Friday 12th January 2018
FGI NEWS STATEMENT 10th January 2018 Regrettably, Float Glass Industries, and its parent company Wright & Offland Holdings, went into administration on 21 December 2017. At 11pm on January 4th, after lengthy discussions with the administrators, Dawn Offland and David Offland purchased the business as a going concern including the assets, trade name and goodwill. Trading in the new company commenced on Friday 5th January 2018. Dawn said “it was important that the new company retained the trade name of Float Glass Industries which is a well-known brand within the glass industry. Also the family has been involved in the glass industry for over 100 years, employing skilled glass workers from the local area. It was therefore important to us to try and secure the business going forward”. In a statement Kerry Bailey, BDO business restructuring partner, said: "The business was exposed to difficulties as a result of the challenging economic climate and difficult trading conditions. Principally, I am delighted that 149 jobs have been saved with the transfer of staff to the purchaser. Our focus now is to seek to maximise recoveries to creditors.” Speaking to Glass Times Magazine, David said that 2017 had been a difficult period, but he was positive about the future of the company and wanted to thank all those in the industry who are offering their support going forward. Our prediction for 2017 is for a further tightening of availability of stock glass. FGI is the independent full service glass distributor with the widest range of stock products. It is important to select a glass supplier who can offer a full range of products with on-going supply from all the indigenous manufacturers. Most of these manufacturers have a reluctance to sell float glass and want to concentrate on coated and low emissivity product.

Wright & Offland went into a business together in an equal partnership in 1894. They began with a handcart in the centre of Manchester selling and glazing cut to size glass. After experiencing some success they went on to open a stained glass shop. The business grew steadily from this point until it began to diversify in the 1950s and 60s – at this stage they dealt primarily in leaded lights, acid-etching and simple processing.

Hiab is the brand name of a Swedish company specialising in logistics – they invented the truck mounted hydraulic crane in 1957 and so the brand has become synonymous with the product itself – much like Hoover (brand) and vacuum cleaner (product). Our hydraulic cranes are actually manufactured by Atlas although they’re still generically known as HIABs.
