FGI FEATURES IN FAÇADE FACELIFT FOR ICONIC HOUSING ESTATE

The multi-million pound redevelopment of Sheffield’s Grade II listed Park Hill housing estate includes high performance Everseal insulating glass units from Float Glass Industries as part of a vibrant new façade featuring brightly coloured anodised aluminium panels and large glazed sections.

Completed in 1961, the iconic Sheffield landmark is being remodelled for the 21st century by architects Hawkins Brown and Studio Egret West for developer Urban Splash. The striking new glass and aluminium façade replaces Park Hill’s original brick panels and timber windows. The extensive use of glass creates a ‘shimmering’ effect on the Sheffield skyline and complements the new façade’s feature panels in colours ranging from red to yellow.

The Everseal IG units are being used in conjunction with a Kawneer architectural aluminium system, designed and installed for the project by SG Aluminium of Blackburn. A horizontal sliding window system with some fixed lights has been specified to offer maximum air flow for occupants’ comfort, together with high security and easy operation.

A total of 1,590 Everseal IG units have been supplied for the Park Hill project to date, totalling 4,453m2 of glass. The units are assembled from 6mm/8mm/10mm clear toughened glass combined with 6mm Planitherm Total Plus from Saint-Gobain - an energy saving window glass that uses advanced coatings to retain internal warmth whilst capturing free energy from natural daylight.

As part of the phased redevelopment, the existing concrete frame of Park Hill has been cleaned and repaired and larger balconies and new concrete balustrades added. The 13-storey north block is being refurbished to create smart new living accommodation, while lower floors will be converted into retail, office and leisure facilities.
